Snow place like the Inter Services Snow Championships

We are extremely proud to have continued our long standing sponsorship for the RAF Snowboarding Team again this year at the annual Inter Services Snow Championships. Held on the French slopes of Meribel, athletes from the RAF Snowboarding Team compete against others from the Army and Navy in this five day event.

Over 150 competitors take part in the championships which serve as a chance for all three services to battle it out and earn a place in the 2019 UK Armed Forces team for the British Alpine and Snowboarding Championships.

Not only competing against their fellow UK Armed Forces, they had competition from the Australian Defence Force who sent a team of 30 athletes to put the British teams through their paces.

Our Sponsored Race

In addition to sponsoring the RAF Snowboarding Team, AirTanker also sponsor the Parallel Slalom race - a true spectacle to behold. With spectators lining the finish line with the sound of cowbells and whistles, the atmosphere was electric in anticipation of the competitors coming down the slopes.

Day two saw great success for the RAF.  Team Captain, Wing Commander Claire Collis, won the Parallel Slalom race in the women’s event. Claire’s closest competitor was Megan McDermott from the Australian Defence Force but despite Megan’s best efforts, our RAF racer pipped her to the post and won first place.

Whilst in the men’s Parallel Slalom event, Flight Lieutenant Paddy Morris took home third place, narrowly coming behind the Army in second place and Royal Navy in first.

Very well done to Claire and Paddy on these great achievements, and to all the racers who took part!

Every year as part of the Championship, a ‘Sponsors’ race takes place where the Sponsors of the event get the opportunity to compete against each other.  An enjoyable, friendly event to take part in and watch. This year, we’re delighted to say that our very own Chief Finance Officer, Paco Segovia, took home first place in the Giant Slalom.

Let's hear it from the team...

In an interview with the team, we heard what it’s like competing in the championships and what AirTanker Sponsorship means to them.

“It’s been a mixed week with new riders, a new experience with racing – it’s quite a step up from the RAF Championships to the InterServices. They really enjoyed it but found it quite challenging”.

“Airtanker have been really great. They have been with us for quite a while now, supporting us with race boards – these are very expensive and a lot of our guys can’t afford to have a race board, which is a quite specific board to use – long, stiff with sharp edges. We also look like a team, because they provide us with jackets – we have a uniform and look uniform. Meeting the guys from AirTanker out here has been great too, they’ve been supporting us on the slopes with the cow bells at the slalom! It’s great for them to cheer us on, because it gives us a bit of a boost”

Left to Right: Sam Brown

“My first InterServices as well as RAF Championships – coming from snowboarding as a holiday to ramping it up, it’s been really demanding. My favourite event is the Boarder Cross. I have done better than some who have been to the InterServices before. I haven’t won any medals but I have come quite high team-wise.”

“AirTanker really believe in us and it’s nice to have them on our side supporting us; it’s a friendly face; you feel as though you are doing them proud if you do really well – it’s great!”

“My favourite event is Boarder Cross – it’s very competitive, challenging yourself to get down the course ahead of everyone else, a bit of “tit for tat”.  I have competed twice at the InterServices”

“Sponsorship funding helps bring down the personal costs for us, and this allows all ranks and rates to participate. AirTanker’s sponsorship means we can bring more newbies to the competition to see what it is all about and get them ready for next year”.
