Air-to-air refuelling and air transport provide the UK's Armed Forces with strategic reach vital to successful operations. The FSTA aircraft will provide the RAF with a step change in reliability, performance, economy, responsiveness and capability. This is due to the modern generation aircraft design of the A330-200 - and in particular their ability to fulfil all of their required roles without reconfiguration. The fuel necessary for refuelling operations, as well as for the aircraft itself, can be carried within the existing tanks in particular in the wings and fuselage. This arrangement leaves the cabin free for transporting up to 290 personnel; and the cargo hold remains fully available for military equipment either on pallets or in containers. As no reconfiguration is required (other than for some medevac fits) the tanker aircraft can quickly be assigned to different roles or can combine roles on a single mission. This massively increases fleet productivity, as well as benefiting from all of the advantages of a modern, efficient, reliable and easily maintainable aircraft.
